Projects > Black Tide

"Black Tide" is a three channel video/sound installation with accompanying large charcoal drawings of kudzu landscapes. The original footage was shot in Super 8 film in South Carolina and deals with themes related to rural culture, class and race in the South.

Below is the statement for the exhibition:

"Southern history is like a black tide, thick as mud, washing over its inhabitants. The residue remains present in the land as well as in the psychology of every individual. Being a native of the South, I have recognized this residue in myself, my family and culture. It is through these relationships that I understand the current of the past as a present and recognizable force in every place and individual.

In my work, I try to provide form and conscious experience to this invisible current."
